Important for gorilla tracking: good waterproof hiking boots, possibly gaiters, muted colors, long pants and sleeves, gardening gloves, sun protection and rain protection.
Briefing from 7:30 by the rangers and a cultural performance. Afterwards, the visitors are divided into groups of up to eight people, each of whom visits a gorilla family. Our customers are usually back at the lodge between 1 and 3 a.m. at the latest.
The ranger TRACKERs go into the forest early in the morning in groups of 3 people and start searching for the gorillas from the sleeping places where the monkeys were left the evening before. A ranger and 2 security guards set off with their group of visitors after the briefing for tracking. There are frequent breaks along the way, as there are steep uphill and downhill sections, often on the elephant paths, which can also be slippery depending on the weather.
In order to arrive safely and relaxed at the gorillas, we also recommend booking a (sup)porter. Young women and men from the surrounding, very poor communities accompany the visitors, carry the backpacks and provide support in difficult places. A helping hand on steep, slippery terrain, when balancing over watercourses and in muddy places, can be very helpful. The additional $20 paid for each porter, without a tip, is money well spent.
As soon as you arrive at "your" gorillas, your magic hour begins.
It is incredibly fascinating to watch the mighty gorillas so close and in their natural environment. Their mostly leisurely but powerful movements, their interaction, their facial expressions. You think you can read their emotions on their faces.
After an hour, you have to say goodbye to the impressive apes with a heavy heart. The trackers stay in the forest - they accompany the gorillas until they prepare their night camp - and now receive their tips in the forest, with the ranger and the security people receiving them at the end when the certificates are handed over. The happy visitors take the shortest route with their ranger, the security rangers and the porters out of the beautiful rainforest and return to civilization.
